What is TMJ?
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. It's the joint on each side of your head in front of your ears where your lower jawbone meets your skull. This joint allows you to talk, chew and yawn. Disorders of this joint can cause pain, headaches, limited jaw opening, popping or grinding sounds, ringing of the ears, dizziness, shoulder and neck pain and inability to eat hard or tough foods. Dentists know this common ailment as TMJ disorder, or TMD. But most patients find TMJ easier to remember.
We are fully equipped to help you or a loved one end the cycle of TMJ pain using braces and other special orthotic treatments. Call today to schedule your complimentary appointment.
As orthodontists, we have to be on the alert for TMJ in our patients who wear braces. Austin parents should ask their child’s dentist to screen for TMJ before undergoing treatment to straighten the teeth, and to be watchful during the course of treatment.
Occasional discomfort in the jaw joint or chewing muscles is common and is not always a cause for concern. Certain TMJ sufferers get better without treatment. Often the problem goes away on its own in several weeks to months. If not, or you think you may have TMJ, please see one of our dentists in South Austin. Orthodontics science has developed effective treatments for TMJ, and the earlier you start, the better.
However, if the pain is severe and lasts more than a few weeks, it can signal deterioration of the joint which can lead to bite changes, arthritic degeneration, and the need for surgery, joint implants, or replacement. Early treatment is crucial and can correct many problems and prevent the need for surgery. If you have suffered TMJ pain for more than a few weeks, or the pain becomes severe, call us immediately.
